Run for your lives#

At that moment, Orson pauses. “Stop,” he says. “This air is polluted by the breath of an outsider. Can’t you taste it?” The others glance around nervously. “Find them,” he growls.

Dr. Sharpe gets temporary blindness after seeing the terror in the sanctuary. Charlotte grabs him and tries to guide him outside.

You can listen the hurrying feet from the sanctuary.

Frank shoots from the balcony towards Orson but misses the shot and then goes into the foyer where he tries to shoot some more cultists managing to wound one of them.

Lucy manages to get outside of the chapel and notices the parked car’s belonging to the Coven members. She tries to use the handle to turn on the engine.

Dr. Sharpe tells to Charlotte to leave him here so Charlotte goes outside of the Chapel as well and tries to get her gun ready to shoot.

Frank grabs Dr. Sharpe and both get out of the Chapel.

Charlotte gets ambushed by 2 cultists who manage to drop her gun. Charlotte decides that the best option is to run.

Lucy manages to start the card and gets inside while Frank approaches with Dr. Sharpe. They eventually all get in the car while the cultists manage to approach and break Lucy’s window without wounding her.

Lucy starts the car and decides to use “Pedal in the Medal” action.

Tires squeal and gravel pings off the undercarriage as the car races down the road. Trees whip by them in a blur. The road begins to bend back and forth, requiring Lucy to make tight turns.

Up ahead, the headlights illuminate a fork in the road. One branch is a stretch of forest road with deep ruts. The other leads out of the woods and into a farmer’s field. The field is surrounded by a wooden fence with a closed gate. Lucy has only a split second to decide.

She decides to follow the rutted road.

The car speeds over a small rise so fast that it momentarily goes airborne. A second later they hit the ground and begin bouncing down the road, headed for a narrow, covered bridge. The flimsy wooden structure spans a deep creek.

The car speeds across the covered bridge, its tires vibrating over the brittle wooden planks. The stress proves to be too much for the ancient structure, and a few boards give way, dropping into the foaming creek far below. The broken boards leave a gaping hole in center of the bridge. The chase is over—they are safe at last.

Charlotte is still running through the forest though.

She plunges into the forest, slapping aside branches and leaping over fallen logs. A curtain of fog envelops her, through which she can see the vague outline of black tree trunks, like pillars.

The ground turns into a steep slope, and leaves crunch underfoot as she descend. Vines and roots crisscross the ground like tripwires, threatening to send her tumbling headlong. But Charlotte managed to stay on her feet.

She bursts from the foliage and sprint across a clearing, breathing hard. Overhead, the sky glitters with stars like chips of diamond.

Her lungs burn as you sprint through the dark. Soon, she hears frogs croaking and the ground becomes soggy. She is entering a swamp!

Charlotte’s clothes are covered in mud as she leaves the swamp. Up ahead, you can see a ravine cut across her path with a creek at its bottom. A fallen log spans the gap, its sides sheathed in a layer of moss.

She manages to cross the Log Bridge as the log is destroyed behind her. She is safe.

Meetup Again#

It is not late at night and the investigators meet up on their car that was left around 1km away from the chapel.

They share information and opinions and decide to visit Joseph Garland in Morcott Manor in Concord.

It is 3AM when they arrive outside Morcott Manor, there ar no lights on and Frank decides to visit the front door where he notices a “Help Wanted” placard.

Morcott Manor is a Queen Anne style home painted in shades of pewter and surf-green, with an asymmetrical façade, an octagonal turret, and a cantilevered gable. A brick wall surrounds the backyard.

The investigators spend the night at Bethany’s Inn in Concord and draft a plan for tomorrow morning.

A new line of work#

In the morning Bethany makes up breakfast for the investigators and Lucy & Frank decide to go to Joseph Garland’s manor with an offer to work for him.

All the investigators approach Morcot Manor but only Lucy & Frank go inside and knock on the door.

Joseph Garland answers the door. He is a tall man with well-coiffed silver hair and an aquiline nose. A blood vessel has burst in his left eye, and the blue iris now seems to swim in a pool of blood

“Hello,” he says cordially. “You must be here looking for work?”

Lucy uses his magnificent small village accent before he invites the investigators into his home with a dramatic sweep of his arm. The entry hall has a gleaming tile floor. A gramophone plays the 1917 hit Spooky Spook softly in another room. Garland leads them through a doorway off the hall and into a comfortable parlor with overstuffed couches and chairs.

Once they’re settled, Garland fetches tea and settles in to answer any questions they might have. He explains that he is a doctor by training, but he recently suspended his practice so that he could work on writing a book. It will be a medical treatise, outlining some of his revolutionary ideas in the field of pulmonology.

“I acquired this house just recently,” he says, “and need hired help to manage it. I’m looking for staff to cook and clean, maintain my car, and do a bit of gardening. Are you interested?”

Lucy & Frank agree and Garland explains the details of the job and answers any questions they might have. He is offering to pay $14 per week which sounds good for the investigators who start the work immediately.

Joseph Garland shows them the house and tells them that they should never go to the second floor.

Morcott Manor: First Floor#

Entry Hall and Stairs#

The entry hall has tile floors, a crystal chandelier, and a grand staircase that leads to the first floor.

Parlor#

The parlor has plush red carpet, a marble fireplace, and overstuffed chairs. There is a liquor cabinet stocked with fine bourbon, bitters, liqueurs, vermouth, and other ingredients for mixing cocktails. More prominently, there is a china tea service that Imhoff uses to serve tea to guests.

Bathroom#

The bathroom is tiled with beautiful mosaic depicting a Greek god with a silver beard walking by the sea.

Pantry#

The pantry is a gourmand’s dream, stocked with spices, herbs, and ingredients of every description. There’s also a wine rack with several bottles of fine Cote de Nuits. Everything is clearly labeled and there is a ledger used to track supplies. A calendar hangs on the pantry door, listing out the meals for the next three months. None of the meals is repeated.

Kitchen#

The kitchen is well-stocked and clean. The floor is marble tile, and the walls are lined with cabinets holding copper pots and pans. One cabinet contains a bookcase with numerous cookbooks and lacquered boxes full of recipes written on index cards.

Dining Room#

The dining room has a long table with delicate, spindly walnut chairs. The floor is gleaming hardwood. A brass chandelier is suspended above the table. On the wall hangs an oil painting of a young man in a suit coat standing in a garden with a greyhound at his side.

Library#

The library smells musty, as though it is rarely used. The leather-bound books on the shelves are the kind kept for display rather than serious reading—history books, religious an philosophical texts, ancient literature, and similar works. A painting of a caravel sailing on a stormy sea hangs on the wall.

Music Room#

The music room is dominated by a Steinway grand piano. Neglect is showing here, as the instrument has gathered a thin layer of dust. Garland does not play piano, and the room is seldom used.

Laundry#

The laundry is a narrow room with a counter for folding clothes and one of the new electric washing machines beneath. The room smells faintly of bleach and lye.

First day at work#

Frank is instructed to go to the garden to dig a hole for a new pond between some walnut trees. Frank goes outside and informs the rest of the group about the situation so Charlotte & Dr. Sharpe go to the Pharmacy to buy some materials needed in order to induce sleep to Garland. Then Frank goes to the garden and starts digging for the new pond.

Lucy stays in the house and cleans up the library where she finds a small peephole behind the painting there. There are no books of interest iin the library.

She then goes to the kitchen and tries to cook. Dr. Sharpe returning from the pharmacy enters the manor from the backdoor and helps Lucy cook lunch while putting some medicine on it to make Garland fall asleep.

Joseph Garland comes downstairs as Dr. Sharpe slides out from the backdoor.

Lucy serves lunch to Garland and he is excited by the quality of the food served.

After few minutes he falls unconscious on the floor.
